Wicked Hunger By DelSheree GladdenReading books is a great way to relax and wind down in the evenings.  In fact I usually spend about 30 minutes to an hour each night reading books before drifting off to sleep.  I love connecting with the characters in the book.  As a reader, I am usually a sucker for a book that has an interesting cover photo.  I realize that most people often tell you not to judge a book by its cover and since I started reading about a year ago, I have tried not to pick a book solely on it’s cover.  Instead, when I am browsing for a new book to read I often look for good book reviews.  I was given an opportunity to review “Wicked Hunger” by DelSheree Gladden.

Disclosure:  I received this book in exchange for a review.  All opinions of this book are 100% my own and I would never recommend a book to my readers that I didn’t enjoy myself.  This book is perfect for a teenager, young adult, or the young at heart.

Vanilla is a 15 year old girl who just wants to have a normal life.  After school, she works at a local dance studio to keep her active which helps keep her hunger at bay.  Most of her friends at school doesn’t know that she lives a secret life.  She is forced to constantly lie to her friends and pretend that she is a normal teenager.  They don’t realize that she has a strong urge to hurt or kill people.  As she is nearing her 16th birthday her hunger starts getting stronger and the urges to harm someone is slowly increasing.  Zander, her brother, warns her about her growing hunger.  He wants her to try to keep her hunger in control.

Vanilla is very careful who she hangs around at school.  In fact, she only has a few close friends that she hangs out with.  One day Ivy, a new girl, comes over with one of her friends and wants to sit with them at lunch time.  Vanilla has a strange feeling and has to get up and leave the room.  As she is leaving the room she gets a weird taste in her mouth.

Zander picks up Vanilla from school and finally had the opportunity to meet Ivy.  Instantly, Zander picks up a strong vibe and something attracts him to Ivy.  As he gets to know Ivy, he realizes that he loves her.  He typically doesn’t date people because he is afraid of hurting or killing those that he falls in love with.

Vanilla and Zander each have their own way of trying to keep their hunger under control.  Vanilla is a dance instructor and teaches several different dances classes in the afternoons.  Zander plays football for the local high school.  He is a great football player and he is already be scouted out by several colleges even though he isn’t a senior yet.

When Vanilla gets paired with Noah to work on a school project, she finds herself falling in love with him.  However, she knows that she can’t be in a relationship with anyone especially someone who doesn’t know her very well.  She is also worried about hurting Kethcup’s feelings, he has always had a crush on Vanilla and she chose not to date him because of she is afraid of hurting him.  Noah wants to spend more time with her but she is doing her best to keep it a secret from her brother.  Her brother doesn’t know that she is learning how to fight.  This is something that her grandmother didn’t want her or her brother to learn because she feared that it would increase their need to hurt someone.  Zander figures out that she has learned how to fight and is now interested in learning.

Zander is also sneaking around behind Vanilla’s back and is secretly seeing Ivy.  In fact, he sneaks out during the middle of the night to go watch Ivy sleep.  One night while Zander was watching Ivy sleep, she woke up and was frightened.  Things are getting serious and they decide to go on a date.  Vanilla discovered Zander’s secret and has learned that Ivy was bad news.  Zander doesn’t realize that Ivy was sent to force Zander to kill her as a sacrifice.  Once Zander killed her, they were going to expose Zander and Vanilla for who they really are.

This is a great book for a teenager or young adult.  It does talk about violence and killing; however, it doesn’t contain any graphic details or blood baths.  If you like the vampire series, this is the book for you.
