Why Some Hot Men Can Hurt So Bad

A research study performed by a team of psychologists led by Dr Michael Price at Brunel University London has found that the more attractive a man is, the more likely he is to be selfish. The team tested a theory from evolutionary psychology that attractive people feel that they are something to "coveted" in the world and don't have to be as generous as they gain more from bolstering this social inequality. "In human ancestral environments, physically attractive and/or formidable individuals would have had an enhanced ability to benefit and/or harm others, and thus would have had increased bargaining power in social interactions."

The research team used a 3D body scanner and measured 63 male and 62 female participants' bodies, and scored their attractiveness based on standard measures such as slimness, waist-to-chest ratio for men, and waist-to-hip ratio for women. The participants then filled out a personality survey which measured their responses, behaviour and attitudes regarding selfishness, wealth and social inequalities. The research subjects where then given money and had to decide how much they would share with someone else as part of the economic experiment of the research study.

Once the study was complete the psychologists asked a group of raters to judge the 125 scanned body images for attractiveness, and a second group of raters to judge how altruistic and egalitarian they thought the people in the images would be in real life. "Our results showed that in fact we may be justified in expecting more attractive men to behave in ways that are less to economic and social equality," he said. "The results suggest that better-looking men may be biased towards being more selfish and less egalitarian." The study however showed no such link where the women of the research group were concerned. "We found that attractive men tended to be less egalitarian and less generous. But that wasn't the case with attractive women," explained lead investigator and senior lecturer in psychology at Brunel University London, Dr Michael Price.

The research study adds a new perspective on why some men are more selfish than others. "Several studies have suggested that wealthier people tend to care less about kindness and equality," Dr Price stated. "But our study suggests that attractiveness is at least as important as wealth in influencing these attitudes." No, don't go be quick to go and give up on that hottie that you have a connection with just right now just yet as Dr. Price does say that not all handsome men will be act selfishly. "The correlation between attractiveness and selfishness was nowhere close to being perfect, and many very attractive men will also be very altruistic and egalitarian."
