Hi, my name is Kendrick. I am your go-to person for Canadian travel hacking!
It all started back in September 2014, when I had just returned from a one week road trip to Utah with my girlfriend, Karen.
Upon returning to Vancouver, I told my friend Tom, how much I had saved on my trip. Having taken a budget airline, my round trip flight from Bellingham to Las Vegas totalled to a mere $200!
I never forgot what he said next: "Traveling is awesome. You should travel more." Then he continued casually "I just came back from Asia. My flight round trip was only $90" finished Tom, with a smug look on his face.
I was dumbfounded! How is he doing this?
He then explained the concept of travel hacking to me, and my world changed...
Getting into a World of Travel Hacking
Karen and I have always been a broke couple. With a mountain of debt thanks to student loans, exploring places like Machu Picchu, or the Bolivian Salt Flats had only been a dream.
At that time I was working a 100% commission based job within the fitness industry. Money was tight, but after spending a hellish 17 months selling personal training contracts, I finally managed to become debt-free. I decided working for someone was not for me, so I launched my own personal training business.
However, that did not end well, as I soon discovered I had already lost my passion for the industry. And after a disastrous marketing campaign, I was in debt once again. During this depressing period of starting over, I found solace in travel, and the fascinating concept of travel hacking.
Deep down inside, all I wanted to do was explore the world, and not be trapped in an industry that no longer inspired me.
By chance, I stumbled upon Chris Guillebeau's blog, and noticed he was looking for guest audience members for his "Make Your Dream Trip a Reality" program. My gut feeling told me I needed to be there, so I applied and was accepted!
This experience became a pivotal moment in my career.
Creative Live Dream Trip Team
As Chris talked about travel hacking, and going to your dream destination, I suddenly realized that this is what I should be doing. I had already accumulated over 200,000 Aeroplan points, and have no problem continuing. Why am I limiting myself to ONE destination when the entire world is open for me to explore? The possibilities were endless.
It was then that I promised myself I will do whatever I can to scrape together the funds to make my travel dream come true. Even if it means sticking with the fitness route for a few more years, or even going as far as to move back home to save on rent.
It has been one hell of a ride, but to me, this isn't just an extended vacation, but rather, it is my journey of self-discovery. Come follow me as I explore one country at a time!
