What to Read This Week: Group Reads (or Books I’d Like to Discuss)

By Crossstitchyourheart @TMNienaber

Today’s list of books to add to my to-read list are all books I’d like to read as a group…like, book club books, and I think you should read them too!

Doctor Sleep by Stephen King: Has this book been a what to read entry before? Yes.  Do I care? No.  Why? Because I want to read this book so much I can’t even explain to you how much.  I didn’t want to get excited about this book.  A sequel to the Shining?  Nice try Stephen King.  As if we needed more proof you “retired.”  And yet…I’ve already pre-ordered it via my kindle so I can get it 60seconds or less after it’s been released an start reading immediately.  I mean, come on…it’s a sequel to the Shining!  Who doesn’t want to know what’s happened at the Overlook.  And who better to read this book with than a bunch of King fans who are as excited to go back as I am.  And if it turns out to be a major disappointment?  Well, that’s what book club wine is for.

The Orphan Master’s Son by Adam Johnson: This book has been compared to Orwell’s 1984 and called a dystopian thriller for adults. So, of course, I’m interested.  A martial arts expert/sea spy/professional kidnapper/main character?  I’m ready to go on that adventure.  And if this book is even half as much fun to discuss as 1984 it’ll be fun to discuss as a group.  I mean, who was able to read 1984 and not say something to someone.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro: Three best friends are enjoying their years at boarding school until they realize they’re being groomed for a terrible fate…and all the questions that come with it.  Not only do I love a good suspense novel with a twist but reading this one as a group, think of all the questions you have right now…sounds like a good book club night to me!

Some book club honorable mentions: John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, Gillian Flynn’s Gone Girl, David Mitchell’s Cloud Atlas,  Rosamund Luptin’s Afterwards
