What Is No Shave November ?

November is a masculine month of the year and not just because it's football season and time for deer hunting. November 1st is when guys are supposed to stop shaving and let their facial hair grow! The No Shave November movement has caught on with men of all age groups and continues to grow every year.

No Shave November was developed as a way to raise money for men's health awareness. The idea is that as men get hairier through the month of November, people will question why they aren't shaving. The men will then be able to spread the word about the many organizations raising money for men's health research. One such organization, No-Shave November, is working to raise money for cancer research in partnership with American Cancer Society, Prevent Cancer Foundation, Fight Colorectal Cancer, and St. Jude Children's Research Hospital. They suggest that men donate any money they are saving by not having to purchase shaving supplies to their organization. For most men, the best part about No Shave November is trying to outgrow their buddy's beards. The challenge and the camaraderie associated with the movement is what motivates them to participate.

There are many methods you can try to help grow your beard faster. Much of hair growth depends on genetics but to try and hurry things along, keep these tips in mind:

  • Wash your face. Hair grows best on clean skin.
  • Use a moisturizer with eucalyptus. This oil is said to nourish hair and help with the itch that can accompany growing a beard.
  • Reduce stress as much as possible through exercise and getting enough sleep. According to Beardaholic, "exercising will improve the circulation of the blood in the body, which will help to promote facial hair growth."
  • Eat your protein; it's said to help encourage hair growth. It grows your muscles, so this has to be true!
  • Take a Biotin supplement. Also known as Vitamin H, it is known to keep your skin and hair healthy.
  • Don't groom it! Resist the temptation to cut or trim it until 4-6 weeks so it has time to fully grow in. Then, you can play around with the shape and style to fill any patchiness or go for a different look.

Beard Styles

Not every style of beard will look great on every guy. Take into account the shape of your face, the features of your face that you want to stand out and any features you want to cover up or at least draw eyes away from. Razor manufacturer, Gillette, has some convenient videos to show men how to achieve the following different styles of beards based on their face shape.
