Cycling along the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal
- When the road (or path) stretches before you — in this case, the Amsterdam-Rhine Canal — it seems silly not to follow it! When we travel in the US, we often take our bicycles with us, but when we don’t, we always look for some way to incorporate cycling into our travels, whether that is just biking around town or going on a longer excursion.
Of course, in the Netherlands, cycling is easy. We did a home exchange, and the exchange included bicycles to use around town. But, for a couple longer excursions, we rented a tandem for Ruby and Mr. Miscellany.
We took a day trip, along this canal, to Muiderslot, a small, medieval castle, about 20 kilometers south of Amsterdam. One of the great thing about cycling along a canal designed for shipping is all the activity you see — barges, ships, larger boats, and the occasional pleasure craft.
I should also add that I enjoy medieval castles like Muiderslot, which is a smaller castle, and as a result, is integrated into, rather than sitting above its village. Like any good medieval castle, it cam complete with moat, uneven staircases, stone and wood floors, suits of armor, and a dungeon, with a notice depicting different types of medieval punishments.
