Vivo Y66 Review: Build and Design

At the first glance, Vivo Y66 looks is like any other 5.5-inch device in the market right now. Although one can’t even expect to get a path breaking design in this price range. The Y66 features a unibody design with rounded corners and regular physical buttons.

The power button and volume rockers are located on the left while a hybrid SIM+microSD card slot on the left side of the device. On the front, we have the 16 MP camera, earpiece, proximity sensor, and LED flash on the top while backlit capacitive keys are placed on the bottom of the screen. The phone comes with an HD display, while the viewing angles are good other devices in the same price range come with a full HD display.

A 3.5 mm audio jack, a micro-USB charging port and speaker grill are located at the bottom while there is nothing on the top of the smartphone. A rear facing  13 mp camera, a single tone flash and antenna lines can be found on the back. The phone does not have a metallic back but a plastic cover with glossy finish which looks premium and is keeps the phone lightweight. Overall the phone does not feel too big or heavy in the hand.

The phone does not come with a fingerprint sensor or an IR blaster both of these are becoming a trend these days in the budget segment. Moreover, the overall design of the phone is almost the same as Vivo’s other devices which a lot of users may not prefer.

Vivo Y66 Review: Performance and Software

Vivo Y66 comes equipped with a MediaTek MT 6750 SoC coupled with 3GB RAM and 32GB internal storage. The processor may sound a sub-par however for a light and average user, the device performs lag free. Casual gaming, browsing, multimedia content consumption is smooth, however, do not expect the same when you play graphic intensive games.

The phone comes with 32 GB internal storage out of which around 20GB is available for the user, which is slightly lesser than other devices offer slightly more internal storage for users. Only a couple GB’s however with phone only coming with hybrid sim slot, this may be a deterrent.

The Vivo Y66 comes runs on FunTouch OS 3.0 on top of Android 6.0 Marshmallow which is highly ‘inspired’ by iOS. However, the OS is smooth and it lets you make folders to sort out your apps.

Other important features include gesture-based shortcuts like double tap to wake up screen are handy. A fingerprint sensor is sorely missed here. The Funtouch OS has a lot of customization options for the folks ho like to tweak the normal settings.

Our battery tests gave around 7.5 hours of battery however during regular usage including a few videos, more than a few calls and after a bit of browsing the phone easily lasted around a day. To add to this there are settings that once enabled help you further increase your battery backup. The phone does not come with fast charging another letdown and to charge the 3000 mAH battery to full, it took me 3 hours to 3.15 hours.

Vivo Y66 Review: Camera

The Vivo Y6566 comes with the moonlight selfie flash as seen in other Vivo devices like V5, V5 Plus or V5s and Gionee A1. The purpose of this flash is to help the users take a better selfie in low light situations. The Phone sports a 16-megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture along with a 13-megapixel rear camera with f/2.2 aperture.

The front camera quality is not bad and it clicks some decent images in proper lighting. It is capable of capturing natural colors with crisp details. A beautification mode is present for people who like software processed images. It is helpful for people who do not like to edit their images. However, if you overdo the beautification mode, the images do not look natural anymore.

Low light performance from both the front and the rear camera was Ok. While the Moonlight Glow flash was useful, the images carried visible noise.

The rear camera is strictly OK and images do not carry enough details. Multiple filters are available in the default camera app, which can be applied while capturing from the camera. A pro mode is also available for serious photography buffs.
