Visual Metaphors Prevent Auditory Damage

Remember when we used to go to concerts and that ringing in our ears was like a rite of passage? Turns out that probably wasn’t very good for us. UK organization Action On Hearing Loss wants to prevent permanent hearing damage among young people. Their recent out-of-home ad campaign by hat-trick design shocks us into thinking twice before shoving headphones into our ears and cranking up the volume.

The pain-inducing imagery of nails, spikes and drills about to penetrate the subjects’ ears are quite stellar as basic billboards and transit ads. But the version with the 3D nail in the kid’s head is going to be the one that people talk about for months later. Kudos to hat-trick for not leaving well enough alone and taking that one design the extra distance.
