uTorrent Caught Installing Bitcoin Mining Software on Windows PCs

Posted on the 07 March 2015 by Nrjperera @nrjperera

Torrents may be illegal to download, but they always come for free. Pirates from around the world upload torrents so others can download the files without having to spend a single buck. Apparently, some third-party apps like uTorrent likes to sit in the middle and monetize this transaction. The popular ad-hogging torrent client was recently caught red-handed while silently installing Bitcoin miner called Epic Scale on user computers.

When installed, the Epic Scale runs in the background on your computer to mine a cryptocurrency called Litecoin, hogging up system resources and slowing down the computer performance. Clearly, it’s not something you want running in your computer.

You can get rid of the installation of this Bicoin miner by going over the advanced options during the uTorrent setup. If you’ve picked the express install, chances are the Epic Scale might be sitting on your computer right now.

How to Get Rid of Epic Scale

Getting rid of Epic Scale requires some work. You can go over to “Programs and Features” and uninstall the software from there, but it will leave some unnecessary registry keys behind.

To remove the registry keys, run “regedit” from start menu > expand “HKEY_CURRENT_USER” > look for Epic Scale in softwares section and hit delete. Do a full scan with Malwarebytes if you need to make sure there aren’t any more malwares on your computer.

uTorrent has been causing a lot of trouble in the past few months, specially with its bloated updated versions. I’d suggest you to switch to a better solution like Deluge, which is a free and an open-source torrent client.
