Using Conditioner BEFORE Shampoo?

By Triedandtestedblogger @triedtestedblog

Hi everyone,

I recently came across a really interesting article on the Daily Mail by Anna Pursglove that I wanted to share with you all. The article discusses the ‘reverse hair washing’ trend that I actually hadn’t heard of until I read the article!

In the article, Anna discusses that she’s always had issues with keeping her fine hair voluminous and glossy after washing it via the shampoo then condition method the majority of us use. She was then introduced to the ‘reverse hair washing’ method which others who use this technique said would result in a blow dry finish with volume/results of that of a expensive shampoo and conditioner, simply by using conditioner first and then using shampoo.

The science behind it is that the residue in conditioners cant be completely rinsed out and this is what leads to hair looking flat. Therefore, by using conditioner before shampoo, you’re able to obtain all the benefits form the conditioner while also being able to shampoo away the residue it leaves.

The method itself is simple: wet your hair then work in your favorite conditioner, concentrating almost solely on the ends of the hair, with just a tiny bit at the roots. Leave the conditioner in for five minutes, then rinse thoroughly. Only now should you shampoo, rinse, and repeat, making sure you don’t use more product than you need. - Anna Pursglove

Anna found the results to be astonishing, her hair looked thicker, shinier, softer and there was less frizz after using this method for 7 days.

I personally find this concept really interesting and would’ve never thought to have tried to use conditioner before shampoo, it just seems wrong for some reason because to me, shampoo always comes before conditioner! I luckily have quite thick and voluminous hair and so I don’t think I’ll be trying this method anytime soon thought but reading the comments from the article, the results are quite mixed! Some say that it really did make a difference to their hair, adding volume and making it softer, even if they already had long, thick hair while others said it left their hair in tangles, feeling very dry  and just didn’t work. Then there were others who dismissed this theory completely.

I’d love to hear your thoughts on this ‘reverse hair washing’ technique. Have you heard of it or even tried it for yourself or do you think its completely crazy? Leave a comment below!
