Green is more than the byword of the ecology movement. This year, it’s considered Pantone’s hottest color of the year and one every well-dressed home should be wearing.

With hues like kelly green, sage, seafoam, kiwi, spring green, yellow green and more, there’s sure to be a shade to fit your decorating style and preferences.

Here are several ways to pull in this trendy new color without having to commit to a whole-house makeover.

• Add a few throw pillows. Choose fabrics and colors that incorporate your current decor’s colors while adding a new shade or two of green that complement what you already have. This is a great way to decide which greens work for a room and which don’t without spending a lot of money and finding you don’t like what you chose.

• Change your window treatments. Whether you opt for full-length curtains or drapes, or prefer to drape a romantic valance across the top, you can easily add new color and new life into a room with window coverings. The cost is minimal and is easily changed for the season or if you prefer a heavier covering for added protection from sun during specific times of the year.

• Add a new coverlet. A throw for the back of your sofa or a new spread for the master bedroom is a tremendously easy way to add some green to your home this year. Choose a shade that works well with the colors already in place to avoid the necessity of changing everything at once. If a bedspread or comforter seems to be too much, try a long throw across the foot of the bed instead. Coupled with a few new pillows, this could be all you need to bring your bedroom up-to-date.

• Paint one wall. Rather than painting an entire room, add a bit of color to just one wall. Choose a focal point and a color that coordinates or complements your existing paint or wallpaper for the best results. Don’t think that “complement” has to mean boring, however! Go for a bold, bright look to bring a splash of color – and conversation – to an otherwise sedate decor.

• Add a new lamp. Whether you choose a new lamp from the store or a second hand version from a yard sale or thrift store, adding some touches of color with your table lighting is a cinch. If your budget is tight, visit local resale shops. You’ll be surprised at the bargains and treasures you’ll find.

• Replace a lamp shade. In the same way, you can easily add touches of green by replacing an existing lamp shade. If you’re crafty, you can even recover one with the variety of free instructions available online. Or if your confidence in the handicrafts department is low, add a few decals or fabric appliques that require only cutting and pasting to dress up your current shade.

• Accessorize. Add a vase, basket, floral arrangement or wall hanging to bring some green into your room without a lot of cost or effort. Find pieces ready-made or create your own with what you have. Spray paint does wonders for frames and baskets, in particular.

Experiment with the colors and shades of green you choose. And don’t feel you have to redecorate the whole house. Add some color here and there to update your style and make your home look more fashionable. The minimal effort will be worth it when your friends tell you how trendy and stylish your home looks this year.
