“I need you to keep these girls safe . . .”

Kate Mason has devoted herself to caring for her family’s blueberry barrens. But after her fields stop producing fruit, she’s forced to come up with alternative ways to make a living.

Renting out the small cottage on her property seems an obvious choice, but it won’t be enough. When entrepreneur Drake Newham shows up looking not only for a place to rent but also for a nanny for his two nieces, it’s almost too good to be true. And maybe it is—because Drake brings with him dangerous questions about who might be out to kill his family.

The more time Kate spends with Drake and the girls, the more difficult it becomes to hide her attraction to him. But a family crisis isn’t exactly the ideal time to pursue a romance.

Meanwhile, Kate learns that her uncle—in prison for murder—has escaped. Add to that a local stalker who won’t leave her alone, and Kate is looking over her shoulder at every turn. With threats swirling from multiple directions, she wonders if her blueberry fields will ever flourish again . . . or if this twilight is her last.

Set on the beautiful coast of Maine, Twilight at Blueberry Barrens brings together suspense, romance, and the hope that one day new life will come again.

As part of the The Fiction Guild’s Elite Reader program, I received a copy of Colleen Coble’s new book, Twilight at Blueberry Barrens, which was a great read set on the beautiful coast of Folly Shoals, Maine. I’m getting ahead of myself here, but let me tell you the book had fantastic descriptions of the scenery and the characters were well written. The story itself included suspense, murders, romance, a wedding, an escaped prisoner, a hire for murder guy and even a crazy stalker. All of these stories within the book have us guessing and all were very nicely interwoven throughout the book.  What more could you ask for in a story?

Now that I put the cart in front of the horse, let me tell you a little more about the story: This is the third book in the Sunset Cove series and is connected to the first title, The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, because this book is about Kate Mason, who is Claire Dellamare’s twin sister.  This book frequently refers back to the storyline in The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, so it would probably be helpful if you read the first book in the series to understand this one a little better.  In all honesty, when I was reading the first book, The Inn at Ocean’s Edge, I really wasn’t a fan of the character, Claire, but in this book the author redeemed her character and made her someone more relatable to readers. It was also enjoyable learning more about Kate in this book.

After successfully battling a life threatening illness, Kate Mason is restarting her life, while at the same time, she is confronted with a faceless enemy who could possibly be someone she knows well.  She’s in a difficult financial place so when she rents out a cottage for the summer plus she’s given the opportunity to nanny a summer guest’s young nieces, things might be looking better for Kate. The rental tenant is Drake Newham, who is a handsome and successful entrepreneur from Boston and is protecting his brother’s two daughters. Drake has come to Maine in order to investigate his brother and sister-in-law’s brutal deaths and it that his brother could have been killed because of his legal actions against a dangerous international crime leader, but Drake is discovering that Heath and Melissa’s marriage was unstable, which makes local officials convinced theirs was a case of murder-suicide.

Because I don’t write spoilers, I can’t tell you much more about this book other than to suggest that you buy the book for yourself and dig right in!  The characters are likeable, the scenery fantastic and the tale very interesting. If you’ve read any of Colleen Coble’s other books in other series, be warned that some of the other characters from other series make appearances in this book too, which is something I really enjoyed.
