I find it troubling that as we commemorate the second anniversary of the tragedy at Sandy Hook, our country has done nothing to curb gun violence. At the same time, in light of the recent report on torture techniques used by the CIA, we hear the refrain from conservatives on TV, in op-ed pieces and even in letters to the editor, “This country must do whatever is needed to keep America safe.”
So torture is justified to keep us safe and yet universal background checks, closing the gun show loophole and bans on military assault weapons cannot be justified to keep children safe in schools. The contradiction is obvious and outrageous.
