Top Ten Authors For People Who Like...Margaret Atwood!
I chose Margaret Atwood because I am quite into modern/contemporary female writers and thought I could hopefully give some good recommendations for some good old feminist literature!
10. Jean Rhys
Jean Rhys is an amazing writer and 'Wide Sargasso Sea' is such a good book! It is a twist on 'Jane Eyre' told by the 'mad woman in the attic' Bertha, Mr Rochester's wife who he keeps a secret from Jane. It delves into her perceived madness and the feminist and racial implications of his actions. 9. Toni Morrison
Toni Morrison's best books, in my opinion, are the ones which delve into the position of black woman and women's issues. Both 'The Bluest Eye' and 'Beloved' do just that and are absolutely incredible.
8. Virginia Woolf
I am a mega Woof fan and Mrs Dalloway is probably my favorite. Her novels are very disjointed and modernist, but not the point where they lose all meaning and you can't understand them; they have good stories at their heart. 'Mrs Dalloway' documents a day in the life of Clarissa Dalloway as she prepares for a party at her home and the memories that walking in London evokes. 7. Dorothy Richardson
Again, a wonderful modernist novel focusing on Miriam Henderson as she has her own pilgrimage into adulthood. It is a sream of consciousness novel in 13 volumes which sounds incredibly daunting but it really is easy to read and great to dip in and out of. I personally love reading about the female experience in the 1920's, and this is the ultimate book(s) to read if you are too! 6. Katherine Mansfield
Katherine Mansfield has written lots and lots of (very) short stories, some of which are really special. 'The Garden Party' is definitely my favourite! 5. Adrienne Rich Adrienne Rich's poetry is AMAZING. 'Diving Into the Wreck' is her masterpiece in my opinion, and is very feminist and beautiful. 4. Muriel Spark
'The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie' by Muriel Spark is probably one of my favorite books. It is about a school teacher at a girls school who influences her charges in some very inappropriate ways. She is a fabulous character. 3. Sylvia Plath
Sylvia Plath's poetry and novels are all brilliant but 'The Bell Jar' is just a classic and a really unforgettable book. Documenting Esther Greenwood's depression, it is so beautifully written and you found Esther unexpectedly relate-able. 2. Donna Tartt
This is one of my absolute favorite books. It is classy and wonderful; a story about a group of Classics students who do something horrible. 1. Angela Carter
Probably my favorite author EVER, Angela Carter has written some of the greatest feminist literature of all time. My favourites are probably 'Wise Children', 'The Magic Toyshop' and 'Nights at the Circus' as they are so magical and have seriously awesome characters.
Those are my recommendations for some good solid female writers and feminist literature! I really love all of these authors and need to get round to reading more of their books!
