Sicily, the largest island in the Mediterranean Sea, attracts heap of travelers every year. It is one of the most famous tourist’s destinations in the world.  From its distinct local delicacy to ancient temples to serene beaches, it has everything one would need to make his travel a hit.

We have put together top five reasons to visit Sicily. The list is based on user feedback and expert opinions that we have received. We have tried to only include things in the list which are unique to Sicily and famous among the tourists.

So let’s get to it! Here are the top five reasons why you should visit the Island of Sicily. Let’s have a look at them;

1: Mount Etna – Taking the top spot is the active volcano of Mount Etna. Perhaps Sicily’s most prominent landmark, Mount Etna is one of the most active volcanoes in the world. It is constantly active and let out smokes and rings very frequently. Mt. Etna is the largest active volcano in all of Italy. Currently is a stand at 10,992 ft but it varies due to summit eruptions. It has inspired the local culture and a trip to Sicily is not complete without a visit to Mount Etna. It is a truly magnificent site. It was known as “the father of all monoesters” by the ancient Greeks. There have no major destructive eruption since 1928.

2: Valley of Temples – The Valley of Temples is second on our list. The Valle del Tempali is an UNESCO world heritage site and is also the nation’s national monument. The valley of temples is located just outside the city of Agrigento. There are remains of seven ancient temples at the site which includes the Juno, temple of Heracles and the temple of Concordia. These temple remains were excavated in 1809. Valley of temples is among the nation’s top attraction. The island of Sicily is filled with history and these temples are bound to raise your interest in its history. Apart from the temples the site is also close to other remains such as the remains of Gate VI and Gate VII and an ancient necropolis. There are remains of other Roman temples as well.

3: Syracuse- On the third position in our list is the town of Syracuse. The ancient Greek town is full of the remains of the ancient Greek architecture. One will find ancient amphitheaters here, back in the day; Syracuse was a very powerful city owing mainly to its strategic location. Like the Valley of Temples the site of Syracuse is also listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among the major attractions of Syracuse is the Temple of Apollo, The fountain of Arethusa, the Greek theaters, the roman amphitheaters and the temple of Olympian  Zeus. The city of Syracuse is one of the major tourist destinations in Sicily.

4: The Cannoli – The Sicilian pastry desert is number four in our list and it is a must when visiting the island. The desert is made in many other countries as well and chance are that you have tasted it before but if you are in Sicily then your trip won’t be complete without tasting the authentic Cannoli. The dish is made by frying dough filed with ricotta cheese, sugar and chocolate. It is available in all of Sicily in restaurants and common food vendors.

5: Taormina: Home to popular sea side resorts the town of Taormina is fifth on our list. It is just miles away from Mt. Etna and is a hit among foreign tourists. The town is located on a cliff overlooking the Ionian Sea. It is home to many ancient Greek theaters and churches. Taormina also has fine restaurants and bars. It has many market places which is a great place to shop for presents to take home. If you are planning a trip then it is advised to plan accordingly in advance as you would want to stay here a while.

Sicily is among the most visited islands in the world and is home to many breath taking beaches.
