Earlier today we shared our favorite gents’ looks from the Oscars. But it’s time to call a premature halt to Masculine Monday so we can get down to business – jewelry business. The ladies of the red carpet played it relatively safe this year, opting for colorless diamonds, often “understated” by red carpet measures. However, there were certainly some stand out actresses on the red carpet at the 84th Annual Academy Awards, and they wow-ed us with Old Hollywood diamonds, colored gemstones, and good old fashioned enormous diamonds (we’re looking at you Angie and J.Lo). Below are the gems and jewels that quite literally took our breath away.
10. Angelina Jolie

Leg jokes aside, Angeline Jolie looked like the megastar that she is in black velvet Atelier Versace. Other than the accessories that double as her limbs, Angie added some blingy baubles to jazz up her black gown and mile high slit. To be precise: a pair of 25 cts. t.w. diamond pins secured to the back of her gown, a pair of 20 ct. t.w. colorless cushion-cut diamond drop earrings, and a 15 ct. t.w. cushion-cut diamond ring, all by Neil Lane and totaling over $2.5 million.
9. Natalie Portman

Natalie’s vintage Dior gown really didn’t do it for us, but her Harry Winston V-shape colorless diamond collar necklace and colorless oval drop diamond earrings nearly made up for it. We loved the intricate diamonds on her delicate frame, and her screen siren hair was lovely.
8. Tina Fey

Our favorite comedian Tina Fey nailed it last night in a peplum gown by Carolina Herrerra. We hope she wears her hair like this every day for the rest of time because she looked so beautiful – and because it perfectly showed off her Bulgari platinum earrings with 47.36 cts. t.w. oval-cut blue sapphires, 2.94 cts. t.w. mixed-shape emeralds, and a platinum ring with 15.10 cts. t.w. sapphires, 3.60 cts. t.w. emeralds, and 0.66 ct. t.w. baguette diamonds.
7. Octavia Spencer

Last night’s winner for Best Supporting Actress looked simply amazing in favorite designer Tadashi Shoji’s creation. The beading looked wonderful paired with Octavia’s Neil Lane platinum chandelier earrings with 50 cts. t.w. diamond briolettes and a large diamond and platinum cocktail ring.
6. Penelope Cruz

Last night we Tweeted our excitement about seeing Penelope arrive looking like a 21st century Grace Kelly. Her periwinkle Armani ball gown was divine with a neckline dripping in diamonds. Chopard’s platinum necklace with 56 cts. t.w. pear-shape diamonds, platinum cluster earrings with 15 cts. t.w. diamonds, and a platinum bracelet with 43 cts. t.w. fancy-shape diamonds made her look like a classic Hollywood starlet.
5. Leslie Mann

If anyone can make couture look effortless, it’s Leslie Mann. She looks downright comfortable in her Roberto Cavalli gown (despite her own protestations about the tightness helping her posture!) The gorgeous deep navy, accented by one of last night’s major trends, sequins, was begging for sapphire accessories and Leslie obliged. Her sapphire Lorraine Schwartz bracelets and face framing chandeliers are just right.
4. Cameron Diaz
via Just Jared
We couldn’t get enough of Cameron in her nude and sequined Gucci gown. She looked statuesque and timeless, and her Tiffany platinum and emerald-cut diamond necklace, platinum bezel-set diamond stud earrings, and a platinum and round diamond Dome ring perfectly rounded out her look. Cameron’s necklace, in particular, was one of the first of the “Real Hollywood” diamond accessories we saw and its unbelievable sparkle was very welcome.
3.Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams, oh Michelle. Michelle killed it on the red carpet in Louis Vuitton last night. Our excitement over her red dress was not diminished when we found out it was really persimmon, and we were hooked the moment we spied her custom Fred Leighton for Forevermark 30 ct. diamond Riviere necklace with old mine cuts. An antique Leighton 19th Century diamond bow brooch was perfectly placed above her gown’s peplum detailing. Sheer perfection.
2. Gwyneth Paltrow

Gwyneth halted the presses (figuratively; she at least caused a Twittersplosion) when she showed up in a Tom Ford cape. Despite initial disappointment that it was slightly more subtle than superhero style contraption, she did don a cuff that Wonder Woman would have been proud of. Gwyneth’s Anna Hu Haute Joaillerie diamond cuff was crafted from of 2,368 rose-cut, round brilliant diamonds weighing 163 carats, all with D color and VVS clarity. She added a pair of rings, also by Hu, to complete her look.
1. Jessica Chastain

Jessica’s $2 million worth of Harry Winston yellow diamonds were absolutely the perfect complement to her McQueen gown. The gold bullion thread detailing called for timeless glamour that was colorful but subtle, and her pear shaped yellow diamond drop earrings, radiant yellow diamond solitaire and yellow diamond bangles were hands down our favorite of the evening.
