This is review has been requested a number of times on my instagram so here I am, finally. I have been going through a serious matte eye shadow phase; practically every single eye shadow I have recently purchased are mattes. While matte eye shadows are known to be comparatively more difficult to blend, I really appreciate that there are more and more great quality, smooth-as-butter/silk/melted chocolate matte shadows on the market now. Definitely great news for me!
The Too Faced Matte Eye Shadow Collection comes with 9 eye shadows, with 3 of them being significantly larger than the other 6. These 3 are Tufted Suede (matte caramel), Velveteen Bunny (vanilla white) and Fresh Linen (light, pale pink) and are great as base/all-over-lid shadows. The other 6 shades are: Chinchilla (warm matte brown), Coffee Bean (warm chocolate/coffee brown), Pebbles (medium stone blue-grey), London Fog (dark navy), Vintage Violet (medium violet) and Midnight (slate grey).
These 9 shadows are also divided into 3 versatile looks: Day, Classic & Fashion. Tucked into the lid are also 3 little look cards that provide some suggestions. I have not followed these so far but I think they would be great for anyone who’s on the look for some inspiration on how to use the shades.
What I really like about this palette:
I love that the all-over lid colours are much larger. I do use these shades a lot more than the rest so I really dislike it when I hit pan with them much earlier than the others in a palette. For matte shadows, these are not at all dry or chalky. They’re very easy to blend and apply very evenly. Simply put, I like them as much as my Make Up Geek shadows.
Velveteen Bunny is the perfect base to prime the eyelid while I often use Tufted Suede on my crease. It’s not as pigmented and not as warm as most crease shades I usually use but I like it enough for a clean, day look. My other favourites are Coffee Bean and Vintage Violet.
What I Didn’t Dig So Much:
Main thing I can think of is the lack of a mirror. Not that I use palette mirrors often but they do come in handy when you’re traveling or need a quick peek/check for any smudges (argh). Some people lament the absence of a true black on this palette but personally, I have so many black eyeshadows that I do appreciate this palette’s ‘substitute’ for black – the darkest shade being London Fog (dark navy). Coffee Bean can also be quite dark with its buildable intensity so that’s a great alternative to black too.
This Too Faced Matte Eye Shadow palette is very often compared with The Balm’s Meet Matt(e) Eyeshadow palette. I can’t do a proper comparison post as I don’t own Meet Matt(e) but I can say what helped me make my decision was that I really appreciated that the Too Faced palette came with larger pans of the all-over lid colours. I also felt like this Too Faced one had more variations of colours that I preferred.
