“They Were Afraid of My MOUTH.”~ Shirley Chisholm

By Jenrene

Shirley Chisholm shares the sacrifices of her voice and what it cost to use it, and how in that sacrifice, was elevation, but also  with men, there was the subsequent dissolve  of  her  28 year marriage & her husband’s identity.

Raised and educated in Barbados and the Bedford-Stuyvesant area of Brooklyn, New York, Chisholm trained as a teacher at Brooklyn College. She learned the arts of organizing and fundraising, joining the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

She developed a keen interest in politics. After a successful teaching career, Chisholm was elected to the New York State Assembly in 1964, and then in 1968 successfully ran for the U.S. Congress.

Women, if you have a strong identity- or your desire is to make it stronger as you grow older… make sure you marry and partner with someone who :

1) Is comfortable with his own identity – whether outspoken or not;

2) And who is comfortable with your identity and not only does he embrace it, he nurtures it and helps to ENCOURAGE your own unique voice.

We have a lot to learn from Shirley Chisholm!
