#TheWeeklyPostcard: Beautiful Bedugul In The Mountains

By Aswesawit @aswesawit

Dear Luke and Leia,

Hello from beautiful Bedugul in the mountains of Bali. This town is situated in the center of Bali, in between three lakes and has a famous temple, Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, the locals visit. Because of the altitude it brings a welcome cooler temperature than in Sanur where we live.

View from our cabin in Bedugul

We are staying at a cabin recommended by our Japanese friend from Sanur. What a wonderful view from the side of the mountain. We can see two of the three lakes from here. The cabin even has a heated toilet seat!

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan Temple grounds along the lake

Nana and I got up very early and had our driver pick us up to take pictures at the temple before it gets crowded with tourists. The fog was very heavy on the lake which made for an interesting photo shoot. There are so many flowers that i can’t count the varieties.

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan on an island

Pura Ulun Danu Bratan temple is located on an island with other buildings directly across from it. The fog gave it a very quiet setting and the stillness of the lake added a nice reflection. It is well worth getting here early and having the grounds to yourself.

A vast array of colors found in the Temple

We walked all over the grounds and even to the other side of the lake where we took a bunch of pictures. Nana made friends with a local girl and was able to practice her Indonesian. I spent the time taking photos and admiring the full spectrum of colors on display, even more than a crayola box has.

Afterwards, we met Mr. Richard and family for a trip to the market place and to visit property available in the area. While there we saw children coming home from school, so I practiced my Indonesian and got two boys to stop for a picture. Practicing your new language skills with children is easy since you would be talking nearer their level.

The market place was wonderful and vendors had everything you could imagine. I got you guys some T-shirts, but not without bargaining with the owner. Indonesians expect to bargain and it is customary to do so as long as both do not lose honor.

Sarongs of every color are available in the market.

Nana wanted a Sarong, but had a tough time choosing a color. There are so many stunning patterns available that will satisify any fashion taste. Which one would you choose? Both of you can choose since men and women both wear them in their culture.

Fresh spices available. We bought cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans

We saw fragrant fresh spices at an extremely cheap price. In the USA, the price for Saffron is outrageous, but in Bali it was only $5.00 for a good size bag. We bought some as well as cinnamon sticks and vanilla beans. We really enjoyed the market in Bedugul.

Next, Nana and I are heading to the north coast and a small beach town called Lovina. We will write you then. Missing you two.

Love,

Nana and Pap
