#TheUnexpectedInheritanceOfInspectorChopra by @VaseemKhanUK

By Pamelascott

Mumbai, murder and a baby elephant combine in a charming, joyful mystery for fans of Alexander McCall Smith and Rachel Joyce. On the day he retires, Inspector Ashwin Chopra discovers that he has inherited an elephant: an unlikely gift that could not be more inconvenient. For Chopra has one last case to solve...But as his murder investigation leads him across Mumbai - from its richest mansions to its murky underworld - he quickly discovers that a baby elephant may be exactly what an honest man needs. So begins the start of a quite unexpected partnership, and an utterly delightful new series.

This has been on my radar for ages. I actually forgot I'd picked up a copy until I came across it by chance recently while sorting out my books. I really enjoyed this book. The comparisons to Alexander McCall Smith are spot on. This falls more into the cosy mystery category though has some dark moments as Chopra's investigation intensifies. I've not read a lot of books set in Mumbai so it was nice to visit another culture for a while. The author does a great job of bringing the city, the people, the culture etc to life. I felt like I was really there. I loved the role the elephant plays which becomes more important later in the book. This is charming and delightful.
