The Sunken Chip in the 10th: The Chips Sure Were Sunken but the Hake Was Magnificent.

Augsept 2013 0017.0 for the hake; 1.0 for the rest - The Sunken Chip, 39, rue des Vinaigriers in the 10th (Metro: Jacques Bonsergent) 01.53.26.74.46 (which they don't answer and takes no reservations) closed Mondays and Tuesdays has garnered great reviews for its fresh from Brittany fish, mushy peas and staff.  (History: I just spent a week in Maine eating both lobster and fried fish and fries and expect that quality elsewhere).  I arrived at 12h30 and found a line as well as packed seating inside at the picnic tables.  It was so noisy, one couldn't talk and not suprisingly my decibel meter showed a summer high of 92.2 (a lawn mower is 90 dB.)

My date chose the hake which was beautifully sourced, battered and cooked in contrast to my monkfish which was tough, untasty and a struggle to get down.  The chips were soggy (surprising, since Alexander Lobrano's review a month ago said the same thing and advised them to adjust the fryer, which advice clearly has gone unheeded). made worse by sprinkling the vinegar.  I am not a fan of mushy peas, like spotted Dick, it got lost in translation to we Colonials, so they were not unsurpringly uninteresting.

The bill for the two of us with beverages and tartare sauce (1.50 E a cup) came to 33 E a couple.

Go?  Like I said, given the monkfish and fries, to return when I can have the hake-level fish every day in Maine, would be a stretch.
