The Statement T-shirt: Unique, Eye-catching And Daring

By Saturnsatori
For a quick update, and to make a short break from the Day-of-the-Dead-Mania that has taken over this blog lately, I decided to highlight one of my favorite staples for the darker, colder and more intense days of autumn:

The Statement T-shirt

Cool as snow...

Bold, loud and slightly outrageous, the statement t-shirt displays a fun pop of color and daring design that brightens up any gray day; not made for wallflowers or the modest – you can tell that its wearer loves the spotlight.
Even though it is a really flashy piece of clothing, when incorporated into the right outfit it can really tie together a high-impact, interesting and unexpectedly elegant look –in a rock ‘n roll kind of way.
The key to do it is to dress up the statement t-shirt; to equilibrate its flashy appearance with some sober elements.  In order for it to deliver its maximum impact – and look more cool and edgy with a touch of glamour and less punky gaudy teenager – it is best to be incorporated into a very dark outfit or one dominated by one single neutral color.

Another tip to make the stament T-shirt stand out without it clashing with the rest of the outfit is to choose one color (or a couple of them) that is present in the design and add accessories that accentuate it or make a nice contrast with it. Need some ideas?

Heavy metal t-shirts are usually a great source for wacky, colorful and slightly cheesy designs. I love how the Metallica T-shirt is coordinated with matching red and blue accessories in an otherwise all-black outfit.

Dark fur coats are good companions for the statement T-shirt as well…

Love how the leopard stockings echo and accentuate the acid lime tone of the shirt design in this outfit.

Imaginary Foundation T-shirts (also feautured in my previous post Science and Fashion: An Unlikely Blend?) is also a great source for beautiful, interesting looking and amazingly colorful shirts:

The inner hipster in me tells me that is even better if you can get your hands on some truly unique, hard to find or rare design; obscure cartoons, prints produced in limited amounts by local artists, cool but not very well known bands you have seen perform – all of them present the opportunity for a little unique treasure. One of my favorite T-shirts this season is the The Anderson one, which Guitar Güero got for me at a small but quite cool pub in the Scottish Highlands. The design is so cool that I felt like I had to have it!

It's crazy and loud and I love it.

Standing tall and proud with my statement The Anderson T-shirt in all its glory, against some owl background... what, didn't you know that owls are trendy now?

You know you are doing something right when German people in Berlin shout “cooles T-Shirt!” at you while you are walking down the street…
What do you think? Do you rock the statement t-shirt look yourself? What’s your favorite one that you own? Let us know in the comments section!
Cheers! You’ll know from me very soon, as my Dead of the Dead altar is quickly coming together! Just some finishing steps left… pictures coming son! Thanks for reading!
