What kinds of shapes does our alphabet form? Shapes for Sounds is a beautiful book that explores one of the most elemental concepts in the history of human communication: how spoken languages developed into written alphabets. 

The chart above depicts the waveforms produced when each letter of the English alphabet is pronounced. The more vertical the black wave shape is, the louder the sound. Click on the image for a larger version.
