The (Recipe) Book Of Mormon

The (Recipe) Book Of Mormon Ahead of her Foodie Walk this Saturday, Ann writes…
The Mormons Are Coming – to the West End, at least. We’ve heard a lot recently about the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, but I only just learned that as a Mormon, you believe that God has ordered you to keep a year’s food supply in your house, to deal with unforeseen emergencies.
You’ll need grains and pulses, honey or sugar, powdered milk and salt for starters. There’s lots of advice available on how much you need – an average adult apparently eats 13 lbs of butter a year, and 23 lbs of cooking and salad oil. There are Mormon canneries across the States, where you are able to can dried food, such as vegetables, to increase its storage time.  This is handy of course for anyone, Mormon or not, who is stocking up for expedition rations.
You’ll need to rotate your food store – so when you’re looking for ways of eating it up, here’s one recipe:
Old Fashioned Honey Candy In a heavy saucepan boil 2 cups of honey to the hard ball stage, 225° (when tested in cold water). Pour onto a buttered surface. When cool enough to handle, butter hands and start pulling as you do for taffy. When honey holds its shape and is a golden color, twist into ropes and place back on the countertop or baking sheet and cut into pieces with scissors. Wrap individually with wax paper.
For more foodie thoughts, join Ann’s food walk this Saturday 20th April, 10 am at Monument tube, Fish St. Hill exit. You’ll end at Borough Market, perfect for foodie shopping.
A London Walk costs £9 – £7 concession. To join a London Walk, simply meet your guide at the designated tube station at the appointed time. Details of all London Walks can be found at www.walks.com.
