The Prinsengrachtconcert, or How the Grachtenfestival goes out with a bangA big celebration deserves an ever bigger climax, and the Grachtenfestival is no exception. This music festival, taking place on Amsterdam's scenic canals, culminates each year with the Prinsengrachtconcert.

This year's Prinsengrachtconcert takes place tonight, August 18th, at 20:00 along the Prinsengracht canal nearby the Westermarkt. The concert is open to the public at no cost, though, if you want a seat, it's best to get there early. Limited ticket seating is available surrounding the pontoon on which the concert takes place.

You'll find that many spectators prefer to watch this open-air concert by boat, anchoring their vessels in the canals along with numerous others. Special passes are necessary for these boaters to get close to the podium.

Formerly known as The Pulitzer Concert, it was so named because it used to take place in front of one of the festival's former organizers, the Pulitzer Hotel. Now it is simply named for the canal along which the concert takes place, though the stage is still set up on the Pulitzer Hotel pontoon.

In the past, the Prinsengracht Concert has drawn in upwards of 80,000 people.

The 2012 concert will open with the Matangi Quartet, with mezzo soprano Christianne Stotijn, Rick Stotijn on double bass, Joseph Breinl on piano, and the Calefax Rietkwartet headlining the event.

Can't make it to this year's Prinsengracht Concert? All is not lost! The even will be broadcast live on Nederland 2 (television), Radio 4 and Cultura 24 (radio), and www.prinsengracht.avro.nl (live streaming).
