“The New Craze?!”

By Latoya @latoyallawrence

eggAbout a little bit more than a month ago or maybe two months by now the department store where I work at received a shipment of “Hatchimals” the latest kid fad that had sold out immediately.

Everyday people continue to come into the establishment asking about these furry toy animals that eventually hatch out of a large size egg and I wondered was that all that this source of entertainment actually did, was hatch out of a decorated egg without doing anything else because that is what it appeared like to me as I watched a clip of advertisement regarding the Hatchimals on the news a while back.

When I first saw the product and the box that it came in up close and within person I didn’t see or understand what all of the fuss was about as the item really didn’t attract my attention then after witnessing a more attentive observation over the broadcast my opinion of the toy went even lower.

I cannot see purchasing over fifty dollars for this item or running around in a frenzy trying to gain possession of it the way people have been doing for their children, to me it is not worth the effort.

Every time we get a new shipment of Hatchimals people are standing outside the store before it opens to be the first one to beat out another since they sell out so quickly.

Just today when I left out from work this morning after doing an overnight shift before the store opened a lady was pacing back an forth in front of the store out in the freezing cold (the weather is very brisk here in New York right now) questioning me about these Hatchimals and informing to me that she has been there every morning waiting for the opportunity to get her hands on one of those “surprise hatch” toys as the buyer doesn’t know what selection of animal/fowl is going to come out from that egg!

So when I got home I finally went onto the Hatchimal website just to get a bigger picture of what this shit was all about all the while knowing that it couldn’t exactly be anything that spectacular as the hype was making it out to be. Okay, I found out that this item is an interactive toy and I watched the video on the site as to how the Hatchimal functions and I burst into laughter at this phenomenon.

Now I could see if the children were making such a fuss over “Georgie The Interactive Puppy” as he is cute and cuddly and actually responds to twelve commands and over one-hundred interactions within a pup-like manner, even the “Calico Critters” are cute as they have been out for years and they don’t do anything but not this nonsense.

Georgie also cost over one hundred dollars but is often on sale yet I would purchase that interactive puppy before I would ever dream of wasting money on that Hatchimal crap, however, every generation has its craze. For me it was Barbie back then and to me she and all of her accessories was well worth it and when I was coming up back in the day it was the Cabbage Patch Kids that was driving everyone crazy, I had seven of them dolls when I was a child.
