Your Craft Beer Guide
We checked in with some of Ontario’s finest craft breweries for their suggestions on what to swill. Steam Whistle sponsors the JUNOS and it’s always a fine choice. (It’s got to be a good drink if you can call it Arse Whistle and still enjoy it.)
Troy Burtch of Great Lakes Brewery in Etobicoke recommends Pompous Ass English Pale Ale.
Linda Yahya of Hamilton’s own Arts & Science Brewing would normally recommend the flagship brew, Rhyme & Reason XPA, which won Gold in the IPA category at the 2014 Canadian Brewing Awards. "But since you're playing a drinking game and you want to last the whole awards show, I would recommend our Saint of Circumstance Blonde. Not only is it named after a Grateful Dead song, it's our go-to, easy-drinking ale. It’s at 4.7 per cent and we use Citra and Amarillo hops for their lemony flavor notes, then take it up a notch by using the zest of real citrus fruits. The result is super refreshing and you can drink more than a few. I'd pair this beer with our Series Two band, JULY TALK, who are nominated for Best Alternative Album of the Year.”
Laura Beauchesne of Beau's All Natural Brewing wants us to party responsibly. “While we really enjoy the concept, Beau's is hesitant to participate in any sort of drinking game that encourages excessive drinking. That being said, we do love enjoying a Lug Tread while sitting around and watching TV.”
C. Lee Brooks of Descendants Beer & Beverage Co. of Wellesley says, “We would highly recommend Harbinger APA for the awards. We think Drake would really enjoy our beer!” You hear that, OVO?
Tom Paterson, president of Junction Craft Brewing in Toronto has paired nominees with a corresponding beer, so pick up some pints:
  • Arkells: Track Layer Kolsch
  • Bahamas: Brakemans Session Ale
  • Jeremy Fischer: Parkdale Pilsener (or where ever Jeremy Lives Pilsener)
  • Daniel Lanois: Station Master Stout
  • Fred Penner — he went to my high school — Kelvin P S Cream Ale
  • Blackie and the Rodio Kings: Night Train Dark Ale
  • Elliot Brood: Junction Rd Black Lager
  • Deep Dark Woods: Dark Matter Black IPA
  • Gavin Brown: Conductor's Craft Ale (Get it? He’s an old friend of mine)
  • Lenny Decose: Engineer IPA — too perfect!
Brad McInerney of Wellington Brewery says, “How about Arkell Best Bitter best paired with Mac Demarco since they're both pretty laid back?” (I would have paired Arkell with Group of the Year shoe-ins Arkells, but who am I? -Jenny)
John Romano of Nickel Brook Brewing Co. in Burlington suggests Cause & Effect.
Rob Engman, president of Sawdust City Brewing Company in Gravenhurst, recommends you savour a Long Dark Voyage to Uranus. “It’s a award winning Russian Imperial Stout.” And it's a hilarious name that really reflects the trajectory of the broadcast itself.
