MY REVIEW:
The Hunter (Victorian Rebels, #2)The Hunter by Kerrigan Byrne
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The Hunter (Victorian Rebels,#2) by Kerrigan Byrne is a 2016 St. Martin's Press publication.
With women being murdered and their children disappearing, Millie is most assuredly the next victim. But who is behind these horrible crimes and what is the motive?
With Argent becoming her unlikely bodyguard and protector, Millie is afforded some feeling of security. But, once the danger has passed? Do she and Christopher part ways? Do they go about their lives as before?
For me, it was Argent’s horrible beginnings in life that grabbed my immediate attention and instantly evoked strong feelings for this man, but his transformation was so exquisite, my heart literally ached, and expanded as he stumbles along in this confused state, utterly shocked by this new set of feelings he is experiencing. He hates himself, is torn, is damaged, scarred, (Sigh!), but is not beyond hope.
While Christopher’s story is the most wrenching, Millie should get her fair share of credit, since she is the muse in this tale.
You will love Millie’s spunk, her courage, and strength, and her great big heart, so full of love for her son, she will sacrifice anything to keep him safe; but what gained my respect was her capacity to love someone like Argent, with his hard and icy exterior, while slowly chipping away at the barriers he has built around himself, Millie being the first and only person to penetrate those walls.
I love romance novels of all types, even those tepid Regencies I mentioned before, but there is a little bit of a distinction between ordinary romance and a love story. A love story goes beyond the hearts and flowers and sweet nothings. It faces true adversity, grows, develops and outlasts anything thrown in its path. There is no denying that this novel is a love story, through and though.
I don’t gush very often, but this book, this series, and this author, restore my faith in the historical romance genre and gives me hope. Highly recommend!!
