The Gupta Empire was an ancient Indian empire, founded by Maharaja Sri Gupta, which covered much of the Indian Subcontinent from approximately 320 to 550 CE. The Gupta’s leadership started a period of peace and prosperity called the Golden Age of India, which was marked by advancements in science, technology, engineering, art, dialectics, literature, logic, mathematics, astronomy, religion and philosophy. According to many historians, the Gupta Empire was a Vaishya dynasty, founded by Sri Gupta c. 240–280 CE. There are contradictory theories regarding the original homeland of the Guptas, and some modern historians believe Sri Gupta and his son were possibly vassals of the Kushans.
Sri Gupta’s son and successor Ghatotkacha ruled from c. 280–319 CE. Ghatotkacha’s son Chandragupta (not to be confused with Chadragupta Maurya of the Maurya Empire) ascended the throne around 319 and ruled until 335 CE. Sri Gupta founded the Gupta Empire c. 240–280 CE, and was succeeded by his son Ghatotkacha c. 280–319 CE, then Ghatotkacha’s son Chandragupta c. 319-335 CE.After Chandragupta married princess Kumaradevi from the kingdom of Magadha, he conquered or assimilated the nearby kingdoms and assumed the imperial title of Maharajadhiraja. Chandragupta’s son Samudragupta assumed the throne in 335 CE, and he conquered many neighboring kingdoms until the Gupta Empire extended across the entire Indian subcontinent. Samudragupta was succeeded by his son Chandragupta II, who continued to expand the Gupta Empire through conquest and political alliances.
