Aesop Bleecker Street resides in an historic neighbourhood that has been home to myriad spirited souls, including Walt Whitman, Franz Kline, Marianne Moore and Leonard Cohen. The store was designed in collaboration with Rodney Eggleston of Melbourne’s March Studio; his signature resides in the unexpected ways in which he appropriates space and employs familiar, honest materials in unconventional contexts.

In this setting he has utilised leather, brass, and lime-washed plywood, all of which are intended to mellow with time in much the same manner as human skin. A timber framework housing rows of storage shelves at the rear extends across the ceiling as a decorative element reminiscent of a de Chirico landscape.

Upon entry, leather flooring effects an immediate sense of warmth, quietude and intimacy, speaking to Aesop’s distinctive approach and philosophy. Eggleston’s customary use of singular pieces as accents is manifest here in an oversized, burnished brass sink and original brass Louis Poulsen pendant light. Customers can explore and select from a complete range of skin, hair and body care products, distinguished by botanical and laboratory-generated ingredients of the highest quality.

Aesop was founded in Melbourne in 1987 and today offers its superlative formulations in signature stores and counters around the world, and online. As the company evolves, meticulously considered design remains paramount to the creation of each space.
