The Disappearance of Stephanie Mailer by @JoelDicker

By Pamelascott

In the summer of 1994, the quiet seaside town of Orphea reels from the discovery of two brutal murders.

Confounding their superiors, two young police officers, Jesse Rosenberg and Derek Scott crack the case and arrest the murderer, earning themselves handsome promotions and the lasting respect of their colleagues.

But twenty years later, just as he is on the point of taking early retirement, Rosenberg is approached by Stephanie Mailer, a journalist who believes he made a mistake back in 1994 and that the real murderer is still out there, perhaps ready to strike again. Before she can give any more details however, Stephanie Mailer mysteriously disappears without trace, and Rosenberg and Scott are forced to confront the awful possibility that her suspicions might have been proved horribly true.

What happened to Stephanie Mailer?

What did she know?

And what really happened in Orphea all those years ago?

[Only those familiar with the Hampton's, in New York State, knew what happened on July 30, 1994, in a small, swanky seaside resort called Orphea]

This is my first time reading the author even though I have a copy of his books The Truth about the Harry Qubert Affair and The Baltimore Boys on my kindle. I thought this book was great so I look forward to reading them. This is a doorstop of a book and has one of the longest page count's I've seen in a thriller for a while. There isn't a wasted word. The book moves back and forth between a quadruple murder in 1994 and the body of a missing woman found in 2014 and touches on some of the years in between as well. I really enjoy this type of structure in a novel. There are multiple character POV's explored as well as the mystery of the quadruple murder and what happened to journalist Stephanie Mailer are gradually revealed. I found it hard to stop reading once I started. This ticks all of the boxes for me.
