The Bone Witch by Rin Chupeco

When Tea accidentally resurrects her brother from the dead, she learns she is different from the other witches in her family. Her gift for necromancy means that she's a bone witch, a title that makes her feared and ostracized by her community. But Tea finds solace and guidance with an older, wiser bone witch, who takes Tea and her brother to another land for training.

In her new home, Tea puts all her energy into becoming an asha - one who can wield elemental magic. But dark forces are approaching quickly, and in the face of danger, Tea will have to overcome her obstacles...and make a powerful choice.

This is a new author for me. I chose The Bone Witch at random as it fit the Popsugar prompt. I'm glad I did as I loved this book and look forward to reading the rest of the series. This reminds me a lot of Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo. The asha's in this book have a similar role to the greisha in the other book. I really liked Tea as a character, who finds herself reluctantly catapulted into the world of training to become an asha when she displays ability for powerful Dark magic. I liked the way she develops across the book as she comes into her power. There are interludes scattered about the book which seem to be from Tea's point of view hinting at terrible events that don't happen in the book so I'll need to read the rest of the series.
