The Best Winery Experiences in Australia
Marina and I are big wine fans and have been able to go wine tasting in some pretty great spots like Santa Barbara, CA and South Africa. We have a huge trip to Australia planned for the end of the year and are very excited to try some of the best wine in the region. We’ve been doing our homework and are excited to take our RV all over the region to taste some of the best wines Australia has to offer. So here is our list of the best winery experiences in Australia and which ones we are most looking forward to – we can’t wait to write even more after our trip!
A good way to experience the slower, more rustic side of Australia’s countryside is by taking a leisurely tour of some of its wine-producing regions. These are extremely varied in terms of both landscape and climate, producing dramatic differences in the culture and flavor of Australian wine. A getaway to Australian wine country is about more than just tastings; it’s also an experience in itself. The following are a few of the most memorable, whether it’s for their lush surroundings or incredible farm to table cuisine.
One of the top wine-producing regions, Australia’s Yarra Valley is home to over 70 wineries along with charming small towns such as Marysville and Healesville. Blessed with a cool climate, this verdant valley has produced many of Australia’s most iconic vintages. Pay a visit to local wineries such as Giant Steps, located just outside Melbourne and known as much for its wines as well as its fresh pastries and imported coffee. A good time to travel is during the autumn months, when wineries are busy with the harvest and the vine leaves turn an attractive shade of gold. While we won’t be arriving during Australia Autumn, but instead in the middle of their Summer, we still hope to try the best wines they can offer us!
McLaren Vale
Another prime Australian wine-tasting experience can be had in McLaren Vale, a short drive from Adelaide. With gently rolling hills and dense leafy vineyards, the region produces crisp, memorable wines including Grenache and Bordeaux. The most famous winery here is D’Arenberg, including its popular Footbolt Shiraz. Don’t miss a visit to Samuel’s Gorge, a highly recommended spot for a picnic to enjoy the panoramic views and excellent local produce.
Since we will be traveling either by rental car or an RV with our friends, this sounds like the best spot for a picnic day in the sun, don’t you think?
Barossa Valley
First settled in 1842, Barossa Valley exudes an old-world charm and over 150 wineries to visit. Pick up some savoury fare at the Apex Bakery, which boasts the oldest wood-fired oven in Australia, and dig into the local Shiraz. Langmeil Winery is one of the country’s oldest producers, most known for its Freedom Shiraz which is produced using 160 year old vines. We’ll hopefully be able to have an unforgettable experience driving through the region’s rolling hills in a sporty convertible from Carsales, or soaring above it in a hot air balloon to enjoy these classic country views – time to prep the GoPro!
Margaret River
For those with a sweet tooth, Margaret River is a must-see destination. This lush region in Southwest Australia is nestled along the coastline, ensuring that you’ll be able to pair your choice of light, fruity wine with freshly caught seafood. Yet the region is also known for its gourmet chocolatiers, so don’t leave without picking up a box of excellent handcrafted chocolates. In between indulging your senses on food and wine, be sure to visit Margaret River’s fine sandy beaches, sun-dappled forests, and mysterious caves.
I’ll be the first to say that I have a sweet tooth and I’ll be first in line to mix chocolate and wine!
Only twenty minutes outside of central Adelaide, the Adelaide Hills is a charming area for wine-tasting, bird-watching, and taking a scenic drive. There are dozens of wineries to choose from, with wine influenced by the cool climate. Like Margaret River, the Adelaide Hills is home to chocolate and pastry producers, which you can experience highlights of on the ChocoVino tour at the Hahndorf Hill Winery. This region is home to traditional German settlements that will make you feel as if you’ve entered central Bavaria rather than Australia, making it a unique getaway a short distance from Adelaide’s attractions.
For food, wine, and unforgettable scenery, it’s hard to beat Australian wine country. Tour several of these regions to explore how the climate impacts local produce and viniculture, and be sure to leave room for plenty of delectable souvenirs.
