The Assembly Ground @ the Cathay

By Dariel

Our recent visit to artisan cafes comes to this one located in town at The Cathay. “All students please assemble at the assembly ground” – sounds familiar? Nope, we are not going to the assembly ground to sing the national anthem like we do in school but rather, going there to fill and caffinated ourselves. This is The Assembly Ground.

The cafe is spacious with the high ceilings and ample space between seats, especially the back-to-back ones. There are also couch seats too but it’s limited. Brightly lit, colourful and staffs are very friendly.

assembly brunch.

The Assembly Brunch ($19.50)

The Assembly Brunch consists of quite a bit of things – sausage, scrambled eggs, toasts, rosti, cherry tomatoes, sautéed mushrooms and bacon. It’s quite a crowd of items on the board and that’s good – the toasts are fragrantly toasted, the rosti is soft and the cherry tomatoes are sweet-juicy. We find that the mushrooms are pretty generous and juicy as well. The remaining items, well, the bacons are a bit too tough to bite, sausage is too normal for the price and the scrambled eggs are little overcooked.

Shredded BBQ Pork.

Shredded BBQ Pork ($14.50)

The Shredded BBQ Pork is a sandwich consisting of Shredded BBQ Pork and Cheese with sides of fries and wild rocket. The bread which is used to sandwich the Shredded BBQ Pork and Cheese really tastes great. Best of all, it is served hot. Taking the first bite along with the cheese and the pork, well it’s good. Now when you start to chew, the toughness of the Shredded BBQ Pork starts to surface. If not for the tough BBQ Pork, I would think this dish will surpass the Assembly Brunch.

We also tried their Latte ($5.00) and the Mocha ($6.00). Their coffee, at least the ones we had, are well-balance that’s neither too thick, too thin nor too milky. There’s latte art to appreciate on them too. They also have crafted beers to chill with if you are not in the mood for coffee.

The food fills and their coffee is really nice to sip into. The real problem here is the prices which we think is a little bit steep. The people behind the cafe probably had their reasons for doing so. In conclusion, we think The Assembly Ground is a good place to chill out, have a chat with friends and gossip with colleagues after work.
