Tarifa to Rabat via Tangiers

Kite surfing in Tarifa, Spain

Tarifa is on the Southernmost tip of mainland Europe, and the view of Africa is very clear.  It is a popular place for kite surfing.  There is a walkway which goes out between the Atlantic Ocean to the west, and Mediterranean Sea to the East.  Also in the center of Tarifa there are many good restaurants, well worth eating out at.  There are lots of hotels in Tarifa, mostly reasonably priced.  You will find the ferry port to Tanger-ville, Morocco here.

FRS ferry service from Tarifa to Tanger Ville - €37 one way

I took the FRS ferry service to Tanger-Ville, Morocco, this service takes 1 hour, and because of the time difference you will arrive at the same time as you set off.  Coming off the ferry, lots of taxi drivers will approach you asking where you are going.  You can ignore them if you are walking to the Medina, but if you are going a little further you could negotiate a price with them, around 15-20 Dirhams is a decent price.

Tangier, Morocco

In Tangier there is a Medina, not far from where you get off the ferry, this is like a market and a maze, there are Riads in the Medina too.  There is a beach, with restaurants which is very popular.  Also in the new town, there are many new hotels and a even modern shopping mall next to the train station.

ONCF train service from Tangiers to Rabat - 101 Dirhams

I took the ONCF train from Tanger-ville to Rabat-ville, which took about 4 hours.  I took the second class carriage even though the price was not much more for first class.  The main difference is you don't get an elected seat on 2nd class.  Also the carriage has 2 by 2 seats, compared with a compartment for 6 people 3 each side facing each other.  Both have air conditioning.  I noticed on the journey they are making new tracks and I saw lots of modern trains not far from Tanger-ville station, it looks like they are modernizing the service.
