Thanks to My Life on and Off the Guest List, I was able to kick off fashion week with the Supima Design Competition runway show at Lincoln Center in The Studio. The show, which was hosted by uber stylist + designer Rachel Zoe (who was wearing a “major” black sequin jacket), featured designers Yvonne Luong (FIT), Kyle Phillip Edmund Pearson (FIT), Meredith Lyons (Pratt), Kate Wilkoff (Pratt), Abigail Glass (Rhode Island School of Design), Jacqueline Seifert (Rhode Island School of Design), Eduardo Calvo (Savannah College of Art and Design), and Natalia Yepes (Savannah College of Art and Design).
The competition was judged by Tadashi Shoji, Cindy Weber-Cleary (InStyle), Alexandra Wilson (Gilt Groupe), Kristina O’Neil (Bazaar), Buxton Midyette (Supima), and Aslaug Magnusdottir (Moda Operandi). I have to say, all of the designers brought it to the runway, so judging was really hard. Who knew you could do so much with cotton textiles? The competition required each designer to rethink the everyday way to style cotton textiles like denim, jersey, and corduroy and come up with something original.
After the runway presentation from all 8 designers, we waited to see which one would go home with the $10,000 cash prize. Rachel Zoe announced that even though it was ‘really hard to judge’, the winner would be Kate Wilkoff.
While I loved everyone’s design, Kate’s definitely stood out. I loved her use of colors and fabric manipulation. Her evening gown with the hand-cut fringe tiered skirt had me gasping. Congrats Kate!
