The British jet-powered supersonic car Thrust SSC currently holds the World Land Speed Record at 763 mph (1,228 km/h), after breaking the sound barrier in 1997. After almost 20 years later, now a rocket-powered car is stepping up to challenge the world record.

The aptly-named Bloodhound SSC, currently in development by the UK-based Bloodhound Programme Ltd, is planning to break the world record by reaching a top speed of 1,000 mph (1,609 km/h), with the help from both a jet engine and a rocket engine.

After finishing the development and going through initial testing, the Bloodhound will drive to the Kalahari Desert in South Africa in 2016 to test the car in speeds up to 800 mph. To remove any dangers, the Bloodhound team also has to remove about 6,600 tons of pebbles from Kalahari Desert track.
