Emma Raducanu makes her return to a major tournament at the Australian Open against the American Shelby Rogers.

Rogers was one of the players who defeated Raducanu en route to the 2021 US Open title.

The Brit is playing her first major tournament in a year after surgery on both wrists and one ankle.

All British women avoided seeds in the first round with Katie Boulter Chinese Yuan Yue signs and Jodie Burrage take on the German Tamara Korpatsch.

There was no such luck for it Andy Murray who was the only British player to draw a seed at the Australian Open, with the five-time former finalist taking on No. 30 seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.

Should the Scot reach the third round, he is expected to face top seed Novak Djokovic, who will open against a qualifier.

Cameron Norriethe only British seed at 19, faces Peru's Juan Pablo Varillas, with Jack Draper meeting with the American Marcos Giron and Then Evans play Italian Lorenzo Sonego.

There are also notable matchups in the women's draw: World No. 1 Iga Swiatek will take on former champion Sofia Kenin, with the winner facing another past winner, the returning Angelique Kerber, or former finalist Danielle Collins.

Naomi Osaka, who, like Kerber, is returning after having a baby, makes her comeback at a Grand Slam tournament against sixteenth seed Caroline Garcia.

When does the Australian Open start?

The tournament starts on Sunday, January 14. It is the first Sunday start in the history of the tournament.

"We have listened to player and fan feedback and are pleased to provide a solution to minimize late arrivals while continuing to provide a fair and equitable schedule on the stadium courts," said Craig Tiley, tournament director of the Australian Open.

"The extra day will achieve this, aiding planning for fans and players alike. The first round will now be played over three days instead of two, also giving fans an extra day of incredible tennis, entertainment, food and family fun.

When will the Australian Open finals take place?

The women's final is on Saturday, January 27. The men's final is on the following day: January 28.

How to watch the Australian Open on TV in Britain

In Britain, Eurosport has the broadcast rights to live performances from Melbourne and will show 260 hours of tennis. To watch on Discovery+, an Entertainment and Sports Pass costs £6.99/month or £59.99/year.

This year, Nick Kyrgios will be part of Eurosport's English commentary team and will be one of the highlights of a camera stream direct from the commentary booth. Kyrgios will be joined in Australia by presenters John McEnroe, Barbara Schett and Laura Robson, and from a London studio by new presenter Rachel Stringer.

How to watch the Australian Open on TV in the US

ESPN has the broadcast rights to show the tournament.

There are some tantalizing openings on the men's side, with Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz meeting French veteran Richard Gasquet and Stefanos Tsitsipas taking on Matteo Berrettini.

Last year's champion Aryna Sabalenka starts her campaign against a qualifier, while Elena Rybakina takes on former world champion Karolina Pliskova.

What is the prize money of the Australian Open?

This year's Australian Open total prize money is a record 13 percent increase from 2023. £46.3 million will be shared among the field, with the winners taking home £1.68 million each.

"We have increased the prize money for every round at the Australian Open, with the big increases in qualifying and the early rounds of singles and doubles," Tiley said. "We want to ensure that Australia remains the launching pad for the global tennis season and that the players and their teams have everything they need to help them perform at their best and continue to enjoy the happy slam."

Which British players will be involved?

The top four British men will all be at the Australian Open: Cameron Norrie (world number 19), Daniel Evans (number 40), Andy Murray (number 44) and Jack Draper (number 62).

In the women's race, Great Britain is represented by Katie Boulter (world number 57), Jodie Burrage (number 102) and Raducanu (who qualified based on her protected ranking).

Will Emma Raducanu play at the Australian Open?

Raducanu will play at the Australian Open after Lauren Davis, Karolina Muchova, Petra Kvitova, Irina-Camelia Begu and Caty McNally withdrew and opened up a spot in the main draw, avoiding having to go through qualifying.

Who are the defending champions?

Last year, Novak Djokovic claimed the men's singles title for the tenth time after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas.
