After walking through the impressive entrance at Glasgow Mal, head downstairs on the spiral staircase and you can go straight into the restaurant or have a pre-lunch drink in the bar.

We, of course, had a cheeky little cocktail – well not quite cheeky,  we were being good so had a mocktail, made using a new watermelon syrup that had just arrived for the bar staff to experiment with!

Inside the restaurant the decor is muted, there’s a mix of seating with the central booths arranged a bit like fairground waltzers!

Don’t worry it’s not Miley Cyrus swinging in!

We settled down to look over the menu and had a glass of Le Troubadour Ugni Blanc Colombard (2014).  A pale white wine with a slight honey sweetness.  Easily drinkable. There goes the being good!

Served at the perfect temperature – hot but not boiling. A really smooth and creamy velvety soup – like good cauliflower cheese with a roasted smoky earthiness! A surprisingly large serving as well.

Lightly smoked salmon accompanied a cucumber mousse and salad with nasturtium garnish.  A light starter and ideal for a summer day.  The white wine matched with this dish extremely well.

Confit is a particular favorite of ours so Mr Foodie was happy to see this on the menu. A crispy savoury skin, the tender duck meat inside pulled apart so easily as expected.  The slice of orange in contrast was sweet and had an intense citrus flavor for such a thin slice.  A dollop of truffle mustard raised this to wow level!

Roast Sirloin of Donald Russell Beef, garlic and thyme potatoes, yorkshire pudding, carrots, greens, roasted shallot and gravy, The Honours, Glasgow, Malmaison

A surprisingly huge cut of steak, this was seriously melt-in-the-mouth and one of the best steaks we’ve ever had in Glasgow!  A delicious slice of sirloin from Donald Russell served alongside crisp vegetables and a crispy yorkshire pudding. To accompany the meat courses we had a glass of Arc des Anges grenache merlot (2012) from Pays D’oc which was a balanced red, neither too sweet or dry, with a fruity aroma.

After such meaty mains we both decided that it would be best to go light on pudding! The souffle of the day was cherry, which Mr Foodie jumped at as he was in Sakura cherry blossom withdrawal since returning from Japan!  This was light and airy with a slight leaning tower of Pitt Street look! Served with pistachio ice-cream on the side.

Rhubarb jelly cubes topped the sweet white chocolate mousse covering a tart rhubarb compote.  One of those desserts that you wish would just keep going.  Mrs Foodie loved the balance of sweet chocolate and tart rhubarb.

We’ve eaten at the Honours a few times now and this was the most memorable of all our visits. The Honours also just won Scotland’s best restaurant at the Scottish Entertainment and Hospitality Awards and we can see why. The sirloin was deliciously moist and tender with a good thickness.

This is one for our recommendations for the Best Sunday Lunch in Glasgow.  Staff were helpful and courteous (as always), lunch was well-paced and the toilets were in tip-top shape.

TL;DR

+ Soup might not excite everyone but the velouté was exceptional
+ Huge steak and one of the best in Glasgow
+ The suggested wines were lovely
+ Great service

– The souffle sank a bit but it still tasted great
