Women have come along way since they left the kitchen.

Today women control 80 percent of spending in the US and they control 65 percent of spending worldwide!

Women are also becoming a potent force within the workplace as employees and job creators. An increasing number of women are going into business for themselves, and as they do they're taking the lead in creating products that will be marketed toward the people who control most of the money.

Here are three inspiring stories of successful women entrepreneurs:

Limor "Ladyada" Fried - Adafruit Industries

Limor Fried - Adafruit Industries
There aren't that many women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM)  fields but the ones within such professions stand out from the crowd.

Limor Fried took something incredibly complex and turned it into something that was cheap and easy for the masses.

Her company sells open source DIY electronics kits that allow her customers to create complex machinery with very little hassle.

She's been rewarded with a whopping $10 million in profits, and it looks like the business is on track to continue growing into the coming years.

because they come up with simple ideas that meet unmet needs.

Shannon Wilburn opened Just Between Friends within her garage in an attempt to make some extra money, and she was so successful that she kept at it long after her initial goals were met.

The result is a franchise that has expanded across her home state of Oklahoma, and the business continues to expand by the year.

Ingrid Vanderveldt - Empowering a Billion Women Entrepreneurs by 2020

Ingrid Vanderveldt is a serial entrepreneur who has created and sold multiple companies, and in the wake of her success she is working to bring more women into entrepreneurship and technical fields.

Ingrid Vanderveldt

"We, as entrepreneurs, will turn our global economy around, but the real key will be to see things through a new set of eyes -- the eyes of women.

As I sat quietly on the plane ride home, it became as clear as day: Everything I’ve done to date was gearing me up to empower a billion women entrepreneurs by 2020." - Shannon Wilburn

It's an ambitious goal, but given her successes and her current position at Dell, she's likely to accomplish it.
