Subscription to Murder?

By Brian Abbott

Here’s something new in the arena of epublishing.  Can’t get enough of your favorite authors?  Try a subscription.

ePublisher Stark Raving Group has launched Bookxy, offering the opportunity to read “novellas written by some of today’s most popular authors” in the mystery, crime fiction, action-adventure and thriller genres.  The tagline on the Bookxy site reads “a shameless purveyor of titillating short novels at ridiculously low prices.

Currently, titles may be purchased individual for $2.99, or mystery fans will be able to sign up for one-, two-, or three- year subscriptions which reduces the cost of selected titles.

“These are full novellas, not short stories. They are designed to capture the imagination of the reader and provide several hours of compelling reading. They are written by some of the best authors in the world,” according to Stark Raving Group founder, Jeffrey Weber.

The books are geared to be quick reads, “around one hundred pages”, and the site touts them as a “new pulp renaissance.”

At the moment there are only a few novellas to choose from, but that is expected to grow.  Stephen Hunter, Harley Jane Kozak, Eric Van Lustbader, Cornelia Read, and John Shannon are among the more than 20 authors currently featured on the site and who’ve contracted to produce content.

By Spring, the novellas are expected to be “available through traditional eBook retailers including Amazon, Apple iBooks, Barnes & Noble,” and more.  According to Weber, Bookxy is about offering a “user-friendly experience,” allowing for quick and easy access from the convenience of a computer, Smartphone, tablet or eReader.

Weber “believes the future of digital publishing lies firmly in the realm of subscription services, and we are thrilled to be one of the first eBook publishers to offer this valuable service.”

I’m not sure I agree with that line of reasoning.  Subscription services have been around—in one form or another—for a long time.  Think Book of the Month clubs.  Some find it a great way to keep up with favorite authors and discover new ones.  Others may find it difficult to keep up with the pace of releases.

Still, I am pleased to see a new avenue for authors to release content.  ePublishing has given authors unprecedented access to readers.  No need to wait for the long process of traditional publishing.  eContent can be released on an author’s own schedule.

However, it’s easy to get lost in the vast and growing landscape of e-titles.  Having a digital home helps authors, especially new ones, navigate the ebook market and garner attention.  It will be interesting to see how Stark Raving Group and its Bookxy platform grows.
