Studying Portraiture…

By Pmeurice
Back from Saturday Portrait class at Heatherley's School of Fine Art.
Studying portrait makes you feel there is lot to learn before starting to express something… Indeed, Human figure is a vast subject and it'll take some time for me to be as expressive as I want in this area. Fortunately, the course is quite progressive, and we can take the time… under the supervision of a great instructor (I'll surely come back to him in another post).
Over the last weeks, we have a red haired model, with a very strong face. I had to make a profile, with very few light contrast to play with. I then put a focus on characteristics of her profile - and her nose in particular - and the strength of her look - somehow, she inspired me some sort of determination…
Here is the painting :

Red Haired & Green

The Process was a pain. I am not used to draw profile, not used to play with Oil, and the canvas I chose was too big… It took me some time to draw, learn and adjust to arrive to the correct expression.
Here are some steps, marking the different sessions :

First, an approximative charcoal, then trying to put some colors together… finally, last session, I learnt to organize my palette on a better way and avoid my colors to get muddy.
More sessions to come, and more things to be learnt! … Painful process, maybe, but I didn't see to time flying by.
