As the Sri Chinmoy Ten Day Race 2016 enters its fifth day, Kobi Oren has opened up a 60 km lead over Ed Ettinghausen in second place. Despite shin issues, Ed is holding firm running faster than third placed Achim Heukemes who himself has a comfortable cushion over Ananda-Lahari by dint of very short sleep periods – no more than 2½ hours at any time.

Volodymyr Hlushchuk and Soren Raarup have climbed past Budjargal Byambaa to 6th and 7th respectively and Andre Andreev has moved into the top ten in 8th place a lap or so ahead of Oleksander Karko again a lap ahead of Sergey Kuzmin.

As Mark Dorion mentioned in a previous post, Fred Davis has had to return home and we send our best wishes to Fred and his family.

In the womens race, former winner Sarah Barnett has her nose in front of the Manoshri Sykorova who leads her sister, Gautami, by less than 20 miles and who is level pegging with the Walking Diva, Yolanda Holder. Nataliya Hlushchuk is right behind Yolanda – 3 miles separate 3rd, 4th and 5th places.
Canadian Kimberley Van Delst is in 6th place closely followed by Vinati Docziova from Slovakia. Elena Kareva from Russia, Oyungerel Seded from Mongolia and Gudrun Freier from Germany are also not far behind.

At the time of the posting of results, the 6 day runners had been running for 2½ hours. John Geesler from the USA, Aidas Ardzijauskas from Lithiania and Vikena Yutz also from the USA lead the race. The big surprise was to see Dipali pull out after an amazing run of 18 years in a row winning the womens event every time and several times winning the race outright. We wish her a swift recovery and hope to see her back in Flushing Meadow next year.

Another former winner returns to the 6 day with David Luljack returning to Queens. David ran 870 km in 1998 – a performance that still keeps him as 5th American in the modern 6 day rankings. Talking of returning champions, former course record holder George Jermalaes at 74 is back again after a long break to take part in the 10 day and Lithuanian Rimantas Jakelaitis who is the 10 day course record holder is back for the 6 day.
