Springtime is my favorite time of year in Florida…not just because of the gorgeous weather, but for the hypnotic and beautiful aromas of orange blossoms wafting through the balmy breezes tickling my nose and sending smiles and light through my soul.
There’s just nothing like the scent of the orange blossom (or neroli)….and it will always be my favorite.
Neroli oil is a plant oil produced from the blossom of the bitter orange tree (Citrus aurantium subsp. amara or Bigaradia). Its scent is sweet, honeyed and hypnotic citrusy/floral. Even better is the lovely effect it has on the body, mind and soul.
Neroli Oil is an angelic fragrance that is like a beacon of hope, and a light for the spirit, and it can aid healing with many emotional and spiritual issues.
The fragrance is warm, soft, floral, and light, yet grounding.
The aroma triggers a feeling of happiness and safety almost immediately.
Neroli oil comes from the flowers of the bitter orange tree, which bloom in the spring, when new life reawakens after winter’s chill.

HISTORY:
Although oranges had been known since the first century, it wasn’t until the late seventeenth century that neroli oil was discovered; it is thought to have been named after Anna Maria de la Tremoille, Princess of Neroli (near Rome). The oil and the therapeutic properties of the flowers were particularly valued at this time by the people of Venice, who used it against the plague and other fevers, drank it as a tisane, and rubbed a distilled water into their bodies twice a day. At one time, neroli was used as a perfume by prostitutes in Madrid (customers could recognize them by the smell), but now orange perfumes have undergone a sea change, signifying purity, and blossoms are worn in bridal headdresses.
Bitter Orange is widely grown in the western parts of India, eastern Africa and Himalayas. Spaniards brought sour orange into St. Augustine, Florida, in the mid-1500s. By 1763, sour oranges were being exported from St. Augustine to England, setting the grounds for what is Florida today – one of the world’s largest producers of oranges. This state even uses the orange blossom as the official state symbol since May 5, 1909. During the orange blossom time, in spring, millions of delicate waxy white flowers scent the air throughout central and south Florida. Being one of the most fragrant flowers, orange blossoms are an indispensible material in perfume industry.
Neroli is used as both a base note and a top note depending on the oils that it is blended with.
It helps regenerate skin cells, improves skin elasticity, and even helps with acne, scarring, and stretch marks. Internally, neroli acts as a natural tranquilizer, and can relieve chronic anxiety, depression, and stress. Besides being a beloved oil by aromatherapists all over the globe, neroli is also often used in bridal bouquets, both as a symbol of purity, and for its ability to calm the bride’s nerves.
Neroli Properties & Uses:
Antibacterial, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic, antispasmodic, aphrodisiac, carminative, fungicidal, sedative, tonic. Great for; Acne, antispasmodic, anxiety, aphrodisiac, circulation, depression, headaches, hysteria, insomnia, lethargy, mature skin, menopause, neuralgia, panic, premenstrual discomfort, scars, shock, stress and stretch marks.
Neroli increases circulation and stimulates new cell growth. It can prevent scarring and stretch marks, and has been found useful in treating skin conditions linked to emotional stress. Any type of skin can benefit from this oil, although it is particularly good for dry, irritated or sensitive skin. It regulates oiliness and minimizes enlarged pores. Neroli Oil helps to clear acne and blemished skin, especially if the skin lacks moisture. With regular treatment, it can reduce the appearance of fragile or broken capillaries and varicose veins.

Neroli Essential Oil has been used throughout aromatherapy for a variety of health benefits due to its antibacterial, antifungal, sedative, and carminative properties. More recently however, Neroli Essential Oil has been discovered to attain anti-cancer effects. Studies have proven Neroli to be an effective inhibitor of tumor and cancer cell growth, due to the presence of its Farnesol chemical component.
Farnesol is an acyclic sesquiterpene alcohol naturally occurring in some citrus essential oils, including Neroli. The Farnesol found in Neroli Essential Oil has been shown to effectively promote the death of cancer cells through apoptosis. Apoptosis is a natural occurrence in a human’s daily life, in which averages of 50 to 70 billion cells die each day. When apoptosis occurs insufficiently in the body, uncontrolled cell proliferation occurs, causing cancer.
Neroli Essential Oil is a widely known powerful sedative and tonic for the nervous system. The oil is able to calm one’s mind and body on a cellular level, allowing for relief from anxiety and all nervous tension. This property of Neroli Essential Oil will induce anti-cancer effects, as all dis-eases are caused by emotional disorder, leading to stress and tension throughout the entire body.

Where to find neroli:
It’s rare to find a pure 100% neroli oil, as it’s impossible for companies to be able to offer it for a low cost. It takes approximately 1,000 pounds of orange blossoms to make one pound of neroli oil….so keep this in mind when buying it as it’s most likely cut or diluted with other oils….especially if the price is low.
