Spring is Here

Spring is here

Officially, the first day of spring is March 20. I don't know about you, but a spring that involves snow in the air, wind chills and below freezing temps is no spring to me.

Spring means blossoms. The kind that look like Malcolm Gladwell tree wigs.

Earthly blooms, bursting with color and pollen.

Long walks outside with shoes that don't cover my ankles.

The absence of hot chocolate.

Skirts with no tights.

These things rightfully don't happen in March. Unless there's a freak warm weather system that gets Chad Myers' underpants in a twist.

But April. We expect more of you.

Prolonged warm spells, not just pockets of heat.

I'm not offended by a pocket though. The weekend, for instance. Sandwich it between workweeks and the weekend is thrilling. Exhilarating. Titillating? All of those at once.

Imagine this: if every day were a weekend day, where would be the joy in approaching a weekend? Which may be a sensation even better than the weekend itself.

The weekend. Pocket of joy.

Warm April weather. Pocket of joy.

Maybe it's been a result of our exceptionally long winter, but this year, warm weather celebration has been off-the-charts. Men in short shorts flocking to the High-Line, ladies in sundresses, Meatpacking frenzy. Here, the calm before the storm...

The storm was worth weathering though; we had plans. Summery, coat-shedding plans. Our destination, our friends' rooftop deck near the New Whitney. The land of promise, sunsets, and tree-topping city views. The kind of place where the kids run wild while you drink champagne and eat good food, toasting how damn lucky you are to be here, in this moment, with these friends, doing just this.

We're out of the pocket again. Back to the land of gloves and scarves. OK maybe that was last week, but I'm still feeling bitter. It's been a spring season in reverse. A season that spurred my five-year-old to request a coat made from polar bear fur. I wouldn't mind one either. Just for the next few weeks until the spring blooms no longer look out of place. The shoes no longer cover my ankles. And we're back up on that roof again, eating fried chicken and appreciating the greatness of life.

Maybe we snuck in a little bit of that life greatness thing last weekend.

Our hypothesis was correct. We need more of this.

Have a great week everyone...
