I love post audio and sound design, but every now and then, I like making some music. When I have the opportunity to fuse the two together, then what could be better? A while back, Indaba Music offered up the opportunity to remix Young London’s “Let Me Go”. I decided to give this song a whirl, and I gave it a different remix feel. This is not my best work, but below is what I ended up with as my final product.
All in all, I really didn’t change the song too much. However, I did do something interesting with the claps. At around 1:13, I introduced something a little different. When I was tapping around on my keyboard looking for a good “clap” sound, I realized that nothing was exactly what I wanted.
I was looking for sort of reverse reverb swell into the clap. I ended up doing something a little different. I added a normal clap sound, but to get that reverse reverb sound I tried to think what made that sound, and made a nice smack? Well, a golf club swing and hit!
Basically what I did was quite simple: I found a sample of a golf smack that worked (and that was legal to use). Then I simply layered it with the existing drum track, and there you go! Here is a video that will give you a better understanding of how it sounds. I cranked up the golf smack a bit so the difference would be noticeable.
So there you have it. A simple little trick that can make your mix sound different than the rest! I love when I get to merge sound design and music composition/mixing.
