Singer Canjelae Reaches out After Sandy Hook Shooting

Canjelae, a former student at The Berklee College of Music, is currently working on her debut album.

The Bermudian singer-songwriter dedicates her single “Healing” to all who are affected by the tragedy in Newtown, Conn.

On Dec. 14, 2012, Adam Lanza shot and killed twenty children and six adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn.

Before driving to the school, Lanza shot and killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, at their home. Taking both her guns and her car, Lanza went on to murder eight boys and twelve girls at the elementary school, as well as six female staff members.

Once authorities began arriving on the scene, Lanza committed suicide by shooting himself in the head.

The incident has been recognized as the nation’s second deadliest school shooting, surpassed only by the Virginia Tech massacre in 2007.

Canjelae is one of many musicians who have responded to the tragedy with touching tributes to both the victims and the affected families.

Born and raised in Bermuda, the talented songstress released her song “Healing” on Dec. 26, 2012, a mere twelve days after the shooting.

Originally a song about the loss of her cousin, the song soon morphed into something more.

“I was on my way back to Atlanta from LA when I found out about the shooting,” said Canjelae in a recent interview with Candor. “When I realized what had happened I knew I had to share the song and write it not only for my family, but for the families affected by the Sandy Hook tragedy.”

The lyrics and the melodies that had come so naturally in the beginning soon faded, forcing the artist to push herself past her limits and relive her own loss in order to finish the song.

“Healing is such an important part of the grieving process,” Canjelae said. “That is the message that I wanted to deliver in my song.”

Canjelae went on to say that her heart goes out to the families of the victims.

“I pray that this song gives you strength to live everyday carrying forward the memory of your loved ones, the strength to push pass the pain, and the openness to let the healing begin,” Canjelae said.
