Shorter Still

By Winyeemichelle
I’ll be honest right off the bat here and say that I am the laziest girl in town when it comes to matters of the hair. Back in 2014, I decided to chop all my hair off in favour of a lob and I absolutely loved it, but laziness - and a fear of finding a new salon once back in England - got to me and then here we were with long, boring, lifeless hair that entangled itself around my neck at every possible opportunity. Some relationship(!)
RUSH is a chain of salons across the UK and I once regularly went to the RUSH salon in Southampton back when I was a student. (Put that maintenance loan to good use, right? Maintain the locks.) I’m a big fan of their spacious salons and well-manicured teams of stylists who’re specialists of their own, so when I was invited to celebrate the Shepherd’s Bush London salon opening with a complimentary cut, I saw it as my opportunity to go shorter still and introduce the Return of the Lob.

The Salon

The Shepherd’s Bush salon is just across the road from the Tube station. Head towards the West 12 shopping center but don’t go in, just bear right along the line of shops outside and you’ll find a compact salon, unmistakably RUSH with its welcoming lights, huge mirrors, cosy chairs and blow-dry bar. I was welcomed with prosecco, coffee, squash and water (I opted for coffee) before being invited to chat to my stylist about my desired cut and then whisked off to the back for a hair wash. The salon offers a wide range of treatments too - just ask for the menu at the front desk for awesome Kerastase-powered treatments. I appreciated the sinks being in a separate room, offering a more relaxed environment as it isn’t always nice having your head tipped backwards in a loud and busy, open salon, feeling vulnerable as you can’t see anything.

The Team

My stylist - Dee - was the perfect host and hairdresser, happily listening to my requests and offering her advice on the cut for my hair type and thickness. We discussed how I usually style it and what sort of maintenance I’m willing to stretch to before getting into a long chat about careers and our Saturday night plans. I found the team to be diverse in ability and background, a surefire sign that whatever your hair wishes, there’ll be a RUSH hair genie to grant them. Praise be.

The Cut

Onto the cut: I did eventually get my beloved lob cut back in. Dee cut it with a center parting to offer me optimum versatility, bluntly cutting in the length before eyeing it to add in flattering long layers to break up the thickness of my hair and aid manageability. I must also add in here how impressed I was with my blow-dry! I am more often than not thoroughly disappointed by blowdries but Dee rough-dried my hair before adding in some soft waves, exactly how I wanted them. I didn’t need to touch my hair once or immediately wash my hair once home like I’m sure we all have before with an awful blow-dry. Dreamy.
I’m over the MOON with my new cut. It was a bit of a shock to attempt to run my hands through my hair and find there was none but I am absolutely in love with how fresh and light it feels. Waves feel like me again and a straight lob is also my absolute everyday jam.

A huge thank you must go to RUSH for inviting me to celebrate the opening of the Shepherd’s Bush salon. You can browse for your local salon and book your appointment right here.
