Shed Decor- Book Review

By Hollie Brooks @MiaFleur_home

Summerhouses, sheds, log cabins – whatever they are called – are all about a retreat. In the good old days every self-respecting husband would have a shed to escape the wife! I think the tables have turned now and many of us want a retreat from the pressure of everyday life and a place to play, read, relax, and a place to beautify, where we can be whimsical with the decor.  Now we are into February and the daylight increases I start to think about my garden and summerhouse and the possibility of spring, and what better way to inspire us than this lovely new book Shed Decor, by Sally Coulthard.

The book gives lots of style ideas that are put into six sections – rustic, vintage, plain and simple, recycled, retro and country – and every section has some really inspiring photos to whet your appetite. This fabulous shed was originally a laundry store but now looks like a Victorian snug complete with shelving (viewed in the mirror) making it a working space and a place to retreat to with a cup of tea.

The wonderful array of plants, pots and vintage ephemera make this shed a paradise for the green fingered. Who wouldn’t be tempted to while away an hour or two in here?

Orla Kiely’s shed is a showcase for her signature wallpaper, fabrics and accessories and is a real style statement.

There is lots of practical advice too, from storage to heating.   I do have insulation in my shed and a small electric fire that pretends it’s a log burner, but there is even advice on installing the real thing – now that has to be the ultimate in shed luxury.   And I particularly like this idea of wooden fruit crates stacked up to create a shelving unit – fabulous for a rustic, country shed.

A book that’s packed with ideas and tips if you are thinking of creating your own garden retreat or just to get a glimpse of another world and dream.
