Shapes And Colors Of Fall At Eileen Fisher

Eileen Fisher fall color Poppy

Last weekend I had the pleasure of attending a fall fashion show at my local Eileen Fisher boutique.

Those who have followed this blog for any amount of time know that I’m a big fan of Eileen Fisher clothing. For the most part the pieces are easy to style, flattering, often washable and wear well. The “system” pieces especially are fabulous for travel. Yes, they can be on the pricey side, but there’s enough consistency across the collections from year to year that you can build up a wardrobe over time.

And I also appreciate the company’s “Vision 2020” initiative, to produce everything with the goal of environmental sustainability and ethical labor and manufacturing processes.

I get that the Eileen Fisher aesthetic doesn’t appeal to everyone and that’s fine. Not every piece from every collection rings my chimes either, but it helps to think of some of these outfits as a beginning rather than a finished look. There’s a lot to like in this fall collection, including some superb colors. That red above is Poppy, and it’s a gorgeous, clear, bright warm red. Depending on your coloring, you may find it easier to wear than blueish reds (I do).

Fans of purple, a couple of options for you….

On the left, Sea Lavender, which is a soft, almost heathered hue. On the right, Dark Night, a deep, bluish purple (or purplish blue, depending on your viewpoint.) Love this one too!

And on the warmer side, two more fabulous fall colors that weren’t included in the show, Cinnabar and Caper.

But the neutrals are still there too. Lots of lighter neutrals this season (Maple Oat, Sea Salt, Almond, Pewter)….

Black, charcoal and Clove (a dark, slightly purplish-brown) play a major role in this collection…

Some notes in general about this collection:

  • there seems to be an emphasis on the more classic EF shapes and “Icons” (revisited designs from past collections). This is good news if you’re looking for more timeless, non-trendy pieces.
  • less volume on the bottom, and a renewed emphasis on slimmer shapes (slim pants, pencil skirts). This gets a big thumbs-up from me, as I favor a long-over-lean silhouette.
  • voluminous pieces are balanced with narrower or more fitted ones within an outfit. (Nice change from the Volume All Over looks from the last couple of seasons…)
  • two words: wool crepe. LOVE this lighter weight fabric, which spans seasons and has lovely drape and movement.
  • a bootcut jean has been added to the denim offerings.
  • and yes, color. While there are usually a few colors offered in each season’s collection, I think you’ll find these colors overall are very wearable and seasonless.

What do you think of this collection? Which is your favorite piece, and how would you wear it?
